Some weeks the culture does the writing for us, and 19 to 25 October was one of them. A Nigerian song took the Afrobeats crown, a Lagos wedding stopped the timeline, Burna Boy walked onto an NFL field in Paris, and half the creative city spent the week at the National Theatre. Here is what moved.
Music and the stage
Ayra Starr and Zayn's "Heaven Baby" climbed to number one on the Official Afrobeats Chart for the week of 18 to 24 October, nine weeks after it first entered. In the same chart, FOLA and Davido's "2AM In Toronto" debuted at number 6, a nice early return for FOLA's new album 9.
On Saturday 24 October, Zlatan and Davita Lamai married in Lagos in a Benin look and a Yoruba look, with Davido reportedly among the groomsmen. The venue and guest list were not made public.
Then on Sunday 25 October, Burna Boy headlined halftime at the NFL's first regular season game in France, Steelers against Saints at the Stade de France. Bolavip reports he opened with "4 Kampe II", his kompa and Afrobeats collaboration with Joe Dwet File.
Screen
Nollywood's October keeps getting bigger. Agbara Nla: The Return has grossed ₦354.5 million at the Nigerian box office since opening on 1 October, according to distributor Nile Entertainment (a figure we could not independently confirm).
Across the water, Cynthia Erivo hosted SNL UK on Saturday 24 October and played Glinda in "Nigerian Wicked", a spoof of low budget Nollywood films set in a place called LagOz. The A.V. Club called it a pitch perfect distillation of the genre. So far the reviews come from outside Nigeria, and we are still waiting to hear how Lagos took it.
Art, design and fashion
Design Week Lagos opened on 21 October and runs to 25 October at the National Theatre in Iganmu. Its centrepiece, 180 New Ideas, brings more than 100 designers and studios from 58 countries under the theme "Making a New Africa: From Material to Market", with a showcase marking architect Demas Nwoko's 90th year.
On the gallery side, Lineage of Masters II opened on 24 October at the Yusuf Grillo Museum in Ikeja, a tribute to the late Prof. Yusuf Grillo featuring 28 artists including Bruce Onabrakpeya and Kolade Oshinowo, per ThisDay.
In Benin City, EscapeMag's Oreoluwa Mojola reports that the Black Muse Art Festival returns from 7 to 10 November with the theme "For Those Who Astonish the Gods", a new Azagba pavilion and a book drive for 1,000 children. And on 22 October, Lagos hosted the first Fashion Innovation Africa conference, a day of talks on capital and manufacturing for African fashion, per BellaNaija.
Next up
Lagos Fashion Week runs from 28 October to 1 November, and AFRIFF follows from 1 to 7 November. Until then, EscapeMag Issue 15 is out now on our website.
