Who we are
EscapeMag is a culture magazine published by Digital Escape Africa in Lagos. We cover the artists, makers and brands shaping African creative culture, in print issues and here on EscapeMag Online.
Originals and Community
EscapeMag Online carries two kinds of stories.
Originals are commissioned and edited by EscapeMag. They carry a series badge or the word "Original", and the name of the person who wrote them.
Community posts are written by people with an EscapeMag account. They carry the "Community" badge. They are the writer's own views and are not edited by EscapeMag.
How we report
We report, we do not repost. Before we publish an Original, we check facts with the people involved or with a reliable record. We name our sources unless naming them would put someone at risk, and we tell readers when a source asked not to be named.
Quotes are what people said. We may shorten a quote for length, but never in a way that changes its meaning.
We credit every photo and video. Where we use work by someone outside our team, we credit them by name.
Paid stories
When a brand or person pays for a story, it carries the "Partner" label and the line "In partnership with [partner name]". Every story without that label is chosen by our editors.
Partner posts never appear on our News page.
Corrections
We fix mistakes in the open.
If you spot an error, use the "Report an error" link at the foot of any Original, or email editorial@digitalescapeafrica.com with the story link and what is wrong.
We review every report. When we change a story after it is published, we add a dated note at the bottom saying what changed. The "Last updated" date at the top shows when the story text was last edited.
We do not delete stories to hide mistakes. If we ever remove a story for legal or safety reasons, we say so on the page where it was.
